Hurricane Katrina is the contemporary metric for hurricane disasters in the United States. It is at or near the top of many contemporary lists in terms of death or costs from a hurricane. This storm was a toxic mix of weather, water, societal vulnerability, engineering failures, messy communication, and preparedness lessons.

Lt. General Russel Honore, called the Cat 5 General, was a central figure in the recovery of a region and city after Katrina. This week on Weather Geeks General Russel Honore sits down with me to share what it was like on the ground the days and weeks following one of America's worst weather related disaster. He also discusses how we all can learn from past disasters to prepare for the next one.

The show takes some fascinating twists and turns into the General's perspectives on weather, emergency preparedness, and vulnerable populations. The General has some pretty provocative things to say about the political response and hurricane preparation. Trust me, you will not want to miss what he has to say. Trust me. He also discusses what concerns him today.

In this episode, we also pay tribute, the way you have come to expect from Weather Geeks, to our friend and colleague Meteorologist Dave Schwartz.

I hope you can watch The Weather Channel's Weather Geeks this Sunday at Noon ET (11 am CT, 10 am MT, 9 am PT) and tell a friend.

And head's up.....next week, NOAA National Hurricane Center director Dr. Rick Knabb comes to the Weather Geeks as the season ramps up. I have some pretty specific questions for him in the wake of Hurricane Earl. He also discusses what is new at the Hurricane Center.
